I have HPV warts – Is my unborn baby at risk?
There is much conflicting information around the subject of HPV warts and childbirth. Lets try and clear up some of the confusion and misconceptions surrounding this…
If you have HPV warts and are pregnant then you will of course be concerned for the safety of your unborn baby and the impact that HPV may have on him or her. But you also need to take into account the effect that this infection may have on you as well.
It’s not uncommon for HPV to worsen during pregnancy. The reason for this is that while you are pregnant your immune system is usually suppressed. This means that HPV symptoms can worsen during pregnancy and warts can grow bigger and more quickly. And, if you weren’t aware that you had an HPV infection, then pregnancy can often be the first that you find out about it, as your weakened immune system, combined with your body’s natural changes, provide the ideal environment for HPV warts to grow.
There are sometimes concerns that large warts can pose a risk during childbirth itself, either through obstruction or the warts bleeding. Extra care must also be taken if attempting to treat vaginal warts while pregnant. This is because of the risk that some medications may pose to your unborn baby.
